Kiev’s Olympic Stadium to host 2018 Champions League final
Kiev’s Olympic Stadium is to host the 2018 Champions League final, a UEFA executive committee member has confirmed.
Frantisek Laurinec announced the decision, which comes after negotiations that lasted a year, on Thursday.
The decision means Ukraine will host the match, on May 26, less than a month before the World Cup begins in neighbouring Russia, which annexed the Crimea region of Ukraine in 2014.
That situation resulted in UEFA preventing Russian and Ukrainian teams being drawn together in competitions in July of that year.
Laurinec, from Slovakia, is the head of a UEFA panel that liaises between Russia and Ukraine on football.
UEFA later confirmed that Kiev would host the Champions League final and also announced that Tallinn’s Lillekula stadium would be the venue for the UEFA Super Cup on Aug. 18.
A UEFA statement added that a decision on the venue for the 2018 Europa League final would be made at a later stage.
